John is working with the Atlas of Living Australia.

John is interested in digitisation and has been investigating ways of speeding up the process of transcribing information on specimen labels into a digital form.

John is also interested in digitising literature and is keen to set up an Australian arm of the Biodiversity Heritage Library. The Biodiversity Heritage Library is an international collaboration of libraries who are working to scan and digitise historical books and journals relating to natural history. This is an important project as original descriptions of plants and animals are as relevant to scientists today as when they was first written, perhaps more than 100 years ago. Many of these old books are often rare and fragile, and difficult to find, yet it is the content of these books which is important.
