The Lord Howe Island diorama underwent conservation work in 2012.

The conservation project, made possible with a grant from the Australian Museum Foundation, will involve removing 44 bird specimens and over 20 egg specimens that have been on display for almost one hundred years.

Specimens will be cleaned and treated in the conservation lab while work continues in the diorama on the plaster, wire substrate and painted backdrop. Located in the Westpac Long Gallery, the diorama has been on display since 1922.
