phylogeny and functional diversity

Add comment Add tags

Phylogeny is often linked to option values and feature diversity through the PD (phylogenetic diversity) measure. But we can use phylogenetic pattern also to develop indices of functional diversity. Just as PD sets priorities for overall feature diversity, the ED method provides indices describing functional diversity.

Faith (1996) presents an example and concludes that

"The phylogenetic pattern therefore has contributed not only to priorities based on general feature diversity but also to different priorities based on variation in function or habitat".
