Image: Woman dressed for a ceremony Ambasi village, Oro Province April 1921
Hurley was surprised to find that many people on the north coast ‘adorn themselves with an immense profusion of ornaments, which are family heirlooms, though the actual reason for wearing them I have not yet ascertained’. This woman’s large quantity of ornaments suggests that she was preparing for a special event, or had dressed up especially for Hurley’s benefit.
