Image: Whiskered Pipefish, Halicampus macrorhynchus, Solomon Islands, 1998
One of the strange-looking fishes collected at Lakao Island was the Whiskered Pipefish, Halicampus macrorhynchus.
The species is very difficult to see underwater because of the blotched colouration and dermal (skin) flaps. These flaps along the dorsal surface (back) of the fish and under the snout give the fish an irregular outline.
This fish was previously called the Ornate Pipefish.
