One way to tell the Eastern and Western Smooth Boxfishes apart is by looking at the caudal peduncle. The plates at the base of the tail form a complete ring around the caudal peduncle of the Western Smooth Boxfish, but the plates of the Eastern Smooth Boxfish are separate.
