Thank you to Dr Walter Ivantsoff for confirming the identification of the fish. Walter stated "Some populations have this incredible copper coloration from time to time. Whitley once described it as "nuptial attire" but that may be somewhat fanciful. If I remember correctly, Leptatherina presbyteroides and L. wallacei (Western Australia) may also have this sheen but never as intense."
