A segmented spider emerging from burrow

A segmented spider, Liphistius desultor, emerging from its burrow.

Segmented spiders (from the suborder Mesothelae) are the most primitive living spiders in the world. They have virtually remained unchanged from late Palaeozoic times to today. Sometimes they are referred to as living fossils.
