Additional information
Ononge Mission Station was established in 1913 at about 2000 metres above sea level, overlooking grass-covered mountain slopes. Just before Hurley's visit a fire had destroyed the church and a temporary replacement stood in its place.
Hurley speculated in his diary that the extensive grasslands were probably caused by generations of forest clearance for gardens.
