Additional information
Mailu men were traders who moved earthenware pots, shell ornaments, pigs and dogs, stone artefacts and other goods between communities on the south coast of Papua. During Hurley's visit the men were busy preparing their double-hulled sailing canoes for the trading season, which began in July and lasted until January. Each canoe had a crew of about six men.
