On hands and knees in a damp gully you always run into surprises. Despite being only around 5 mm long, the dramatic hue of this Red Velvet Mite (genus Trombidium) made it unmissable as it navigated its moss and lichen terrain on Black Mountain, ACT. The charismatic invertebrate obligingly posed for several minutes until I had the shot I wanted. Mites (Acarina) share an order (Arachnida) with spiders and ticks.
