Additional information

This design by Jessica Kieft from Sydney is titled ‘Fish out of water’. The dress is made from calico overlain by black garbage bags. It’s fitted, for a narrow, slippery, dark look – like an eel or a Frill Shark. Some straws are fitted inside the dress, to provide body. The structured cap-sleeves reference the Frill Shark. A cirrate octopus inspired the ‘fish tail’ shape at the hem. Different materials are visible at the bottom – blue vinyl mesh, calico and garbage bags. They aim to give a sense of the panel-like webbing between the arms of cirrate octopuses. The detailing on the top at the back is cut from gold-coloured lino-board, in shapes inspired by the dagger-like teeth of a dragon fish. Fish net was used for a fascinator and to overlay the dress. Black felt, glue, thread and fishing line were used in construction.
