Birds' eggs form a major part of the collection. Egg collecting was once very popular, although it is now illegal. Many of these early collections have come to the Museum. There are around 20,000 registered clutches of eggs in the collection.
Eggs, or more correctly, the empty egg shells, are very fragile. They must be stored in a manner that prevents damage. For example, this three-egg clutch of a Noisy Miner Manorina melanocephala is kept in a box with lots of cotton wool padding. While most of the egg collection is housed in off-site storage, a reference collection is held in the main collection.
