Image: Consolidating fragile tassles on a Maori cloak
Conservator Tanja Bernd applies an alginate based consolidant to plant fibre tassles on a Maori cloak. The tassles have become brittle and dessicated as a result of a chemical reaction between the environment and the dye used to colour them. Consolidation will prevent further loss of fibres by binding them together.
