Students Act Locally Against Climate Change
Friday, July 25, 2008
The inaugural Action Against Climate Change Eureka Schools Prize, sponsored by Macquarie University, asked students to measure CO2 emissions at home or school and suggest ways to reduce these emissions. Results must be scientifically measured (it was a science prize after all!) and presented on-line.
How students presented their online results was up to them - the more creative the better.
AND THE FINALISTS ARE:
Jack, Marco, Jordan, Richard and Samuel from Bowral High School in NSW's Southern Highlands wrote, directed and starred in a documentary that investigated the habits of real households to highlight different types of carbon emissions and how simple changes can have a huge impact. See the boy's creation by following this link:http://www.bowralhighschool.nsw.edu.au/the_school/faculties/science/assessment.html
Daniel is a Year 8 student from Pacific Hills Christian School in Dural who produced a revealing study of the carbon footprint of his school. By surveying the travel habits of fellow students, Daniel concluded that if every child in his school caught the bus, the schools carbon footprint could be reduced by a staggering 80%. Storm is a Year 10 student from Marist Regional College in Burnie, Tasmania who did an amazing research project analysing the capacity of the marine microalgae Dunaliella tertiolecta to sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide and to produce plant bio-mass for bio-diesel production. An all-girl team of Year 10 students from Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School in Terranora NSW did a novel examination of how, if buses run on biofuels, they could not only reduce the carbon emissions of their school, but also act as an example for other schools to follow. All these finalists will be heading to Sydney to attend the swanky Eureka Prizes Award Dinner on Tuesday 19 August to find if they've won.
Good luck guys!
