2010 Fashion Less Waste finalists announced

The 2010 judges of Fashion Less Waste were challenged to choose finalists from so many wonderful entries. This annual fashion design competition invites students to create an outfit that is mostly made from materials originally used for a non-clothing purpose. In this International Year of Biodiversity, students were inspired by our fabulous Australian animals.

Inspiration for entries came from reptiles, insects, amphibians, fish, molluscs, jellyfish and, most numerously, from birds. Imagine a large flock of different bird species and you have the picture. You should see the entry photographs! Of course we can’t post any on the web yet... That would spoil your surprise upon seeing the entries paraded on the 27th of May, in person or soon afterwards on video through the Australian Museum website.

The judges who chose the finalists were:

• Louise Olsen of Dinosaur Designs
• Kara Smith of Kara Smith

The judges thoroughly enjoyed inspecting the photographs, and reading about each entrant's materials and how the inspiring animals are visible in each entry.

We were surprised to receive only three entries in the TAFE, Tertiary & Design School category. Students of these learning institutions – Be ready to enter in 2011! However, we were not disappointed by the standard of these three entries. They will be judged at the parade, and each will be a deserved winner or runner-up.

An advantage also arose for some Secondary School entrants – we were able to choose more than 10 Secondary School finalists. Once the judges’ scores were tallied, it was clear that three entrants had tied for 11th place, just below 10th place. We wanted to include these wonderful entries as finalists too, especially because the parade can then better represent the diversity of the entries and of their animal inspirations... After all, it is the International Year of Biodiversity!

(Drum roll) ... And the finalists are... (rustling paper) ...

 

In the TAFE, Tertiary or Design School category:

• Sarah Follent from Kingscliff TAFE who was inspired by native birds generally
• Lauren Rountree from St George TAFE, Kogarah who was inspired by the fish Pomatomus salatrix, commonly known as tailor in Australia
• Sarah Jane Williams from Kingscliff TAFE who was inspired by octopus and fish species generally

In the Secondary School category:

• Zarrin Aghdasi of Miller Technology High School who was inspired by the Black Swan, Cygnus atratus
• Bonita Alexander and Jade Leggett of Mary Mackillop Catholic School who were inspired by the Superb Lyrebird, Menura novaehollandiae, and the Rainbow Lorikeet, Trichoglossus haematodus
• Sigrid Anita Barnes of Cobar High School who was inspired by the Satin Bower Bird, Ptilonorhynchus violaceus
• Courtney Blank of Nowra High School who was inspired by the Gouldian Finch, Erythrura gouldiae, and the Red-eyed Tree Frog, Litoria chloris
• Lily Fitzpatrick of Nowra High School who was inspired by the Box Jellyfish, Chironex fleckeri
• Anna Henry of Nowra High School who was inspired by the (male) Emu, Dromaius novaehollandiae
• Maria Juchkov of Cecil Hills High School who was inspired by the Spiky Gurnard, Lepidotrigla papilio
• Sally Kozah and Sarah Sanayeh of Our Lady of Lebanon College who were inspired by the Ulysses Butterfly, Papilio ulysses.
• Cleo Klafas and Maria Sharrock of Macquarie Fields High School who was inspired by Australian marine life, especially White’s Seahorse, Hippocampus whitei
• Marwa Malla of Bass High School who was inspired by the Frill-necked Lizard, Chlamydosaurus kingii
• Katinka Olynick of OLMC Burraneer who was inspired by the Australian Tiger Snake, genus Notechis
• Jade Pehar of St Francis Xavier College, ACT who was inspired by the Rainbow Lorikeet, Trichoglossus haematodus
• Zebulun Tullah of Cobar High School who was inspired by the crow, genus Corvus

Who will be awarded?

We await the parade on the 27th of May with expectation. Who will be awarded by Akira Isogawa and the other judges? They will win cash and have their entry displayed at the Strand Arcade in June and the Australian Museum in July. Stay tuned for further updates about Fashion Less Waste 2010: Biodiverse!
