New Exhibition - Tiwi Footy
Our next upstairs temporary show looks at something unusual for the Australian Museum - sport.
The exhibitions team is in a hectic last few weeks before a double-changeover of our exhibitions spaces, after bidding farewell to Amazing Backyard Adventures and Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Later in May, we will be unveiling our celebration of the International Year of Biodiversity, but first we open Yiloga! Tiwi Footy in our upstairs temporary exhibition space.
This is a photographic exhibition, featuring a set of dramatic colour and black-and-white images that explore the role of AFL football in Tiwi culture. Our designers have been working on a colourful and vibrant environment for the space, and we have also developed new displays from our own collections of Tiwi artefacts and through two newly commissioned pieces of sculpture. Video footage from this year's Tiwi grand final and a documentary about the game in the Tiwi Islands complete the exhibition, which opens on the 15th of May.
Meanwhile, to whet your appetite, here are a couple of interesting links from the ABC - an introduction to Tiwi Footy, and a recent radio story covering this year's Northern Territory league, in which the Tiwi Bombers side made it to the grand final.
