Yiwarra Kuju: The Canning Stock Route
Discover the richness of desert life today.
Discover more than 120 contemporary paintings, cultural objects and remarkable new media work which reclaim the untold Aboriginal history of the Canning Stock Route - the world’s longest stock route through the deserts of Western Australia.
One of the toughest and most remote tracks in the world, the Canning Stock Route runs 1800km from Halls Creek to Wiluna.
The development of this ultimately unsuccessful cattle route dramatically affected the lives of Aboriginal people and this groundbreaking exhibition focuses on telling their story – in their voice, through their art and objects.
The exhibition was developed by the National Museum of Australia in partnership with FORM, an independent arts organisation based in Perth, in collaboration with artists, traditional custodians and emerging Aboriginal curators and filmmakers.
The exhibition is supported by the National Collecting Institution Touring and Outreach Program.
