As the name implies, the Weed Whitings occur in weedy areas often associated with rocky reefs.

These fishes are only known from Australia and New Zealand.  12 species in 4 genera are recognised.  This gallery shows some of them.

Weed Whitings are have also been called Rock Whiting.  They are currently grouped in the subfamily Odacinae  in the family Labridae.
