Measuring the impact of museums

How do we measure the impact of museums on their communities?

Investigating the impact of small museums in their local communities was a collaborative project funded by the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS); the Australian Museum; Arts NSW and museums galleries NSW. It was a methodological exploration of how to define, and then measure, the impact that museums have in their local areas. Three case study institutions were studied.

Several papers were published that reported on aspects of the project:

Measuring the impact of museums on their local communities: the role of the twenty-first century museum. Paper presented by Lynda Kelly at the 2006 INTERCOM conference, Taipei.

Investigating social impacts of small museums in local settings: implications for policy making by Christine Burton and Janette Griffin University of Technology, Sydney, presented at the International Conference on Cultural Policy Research, Vienna, Austria, July 2006. Published in ICCPR 2006: Fourth International Conference on Cultural Policy Research, ed Wimmer, E, EDUCULT, Vienna, Austria, pp. 1-18.
