The hawkfishes have tassel-like cirri on the tips of the dorsal fin spines.  These small fishes live on coral and rocky reefs where they are often seen perched on their thickened lower pectoral fin rays.  Worldwide, 33 species are known.  The Australian fauna contains 12 species in 8 genera.
